Tongariro to Wellington

NZ time... Tuesday 10th January ...6.30pm

Weather was dry but grey when we awoke this morning and again the mountains were covered in low cloud, so we never did see the best of the views, sad!

We left late-morning for the drive south to Wellington. The weather improved as we drove south and it was good to see blue skies and sunshine.

On the way, we planned to drive through the Manawatu Gorge, as recommended by Ian....well, Ian, the SODDEN Gorge was closed to traffic, as there had been two landslips onto the road in recent days!...So, we drove past the "road closed" barrier up to where there was a car park and then we chose to do a bush walk to one of the high look-out points above the Gorge. It took about half an hour of strenuous climbing to get there, but there was a great view and we could also see where one of the landslips had occurred.
Sunny & hot as we arrived in Wellington around 5.30pm and our B&B is in an excellent location, where we have received a warm welcome from Chris and Ruth.
